Israel's opposition Labour party voted 04 February 2004 for Peres to continue as leader for another two years, party sources said. The 80-year-old Nobel peace prize winner won backing of around 60 percent of members at a meeting of his party's convention in Tel Aviv to remain as head of the faction until December 2005. Peres, a leading figure on the Israeli political scene for nearly half a century, was elected temporary leader of the party for just one year last June after the party's general election debacle in January.
